What is Jigsaw?
Jigsaw is a comprehensive scheme of work used for the whole school from Nursery through to Year 6. The programme helps us teach our children emotional literacy, social and lifelong skills, and resilience in a carefully considered and age-appropriate manner. It will equip pupils to lead happier and healthier lives, giving them agency to make their way through the world.
What is a mindful approach?
At Welbourne, we believe mindfulness is a vital tool for life. Not only does it support the regulation of emotion and build emotional resilience but also enhances focus and concentration; both help to optimise learning. ‘Mindful’ children can more readily choose their responses to situations rather than react while caught up in their thoughts and emotions.
SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural) development
SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural) development opportunities are mapped throughout. Every lesson contributes to at least one of these aspects of children’s development. All of these pieces of learning are brought together to form a cohesive picture, helping children to know and value who they are and understand how they relate to other people the world.
British Values
The values taught in this scheme are integral to our school ethos, whilst encouraging an essential awareness of British Values throughout. We have regular opportunities throughout the PSHE curriculum to celebrate British Values such as ‘Democracy’ or Respect and Tolerance.
The ‘Puzzle’ pieces
Jigsaw PSHE embodies our whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time. This generates a whole school focus each half-term for adults and children alike.

The Structure of the lessons in Jigsaw
The creation of Jigsaw is motivated by the genuine belief that if attention is paid to supporting children’s personal development in a structured and developmentally appropriate way. Unicef Rights Respecting School
Welbourne has been awarded a Gold Level accreditation by Unicef UK’s Rights Respecting School programme, and we are the first school in Haringey to achieve this award. A Rights Respecting School is a community where children’s rights are learned, taught, practised, respected, protected and promoted.
Unicef is the world’s leading organisation working for children and their rights. The Rights Respecting Schools Award is granted to schools that show commitment to promoting and realising children’s rights and encouraging adults, children and young people to respect the rights of others in school. The school has been working with Unicef UK since 2017.
The Gold Level award recognises the school’s achievement in fully embedding the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child at the heart of a school’s policies, practice and ethos.
